War of words over substitution: Bayer Leverkusen coach defends Boniface after angry reaction
Published: October 28, 2024
Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso has played down Victor Boniface's heated response to being substituted during the team's 2-2 draw against Werder Bremen.
The Nigerian striker, who made a successful comeback just six days after a serious car accident, scored a goal but was visibly unhappy when replaced by Patrik Schick in the 70th minute.
Unhappy about his substitution, Boniface engaged in a war of words with Alonso, expressing his dissatisfaction with the decision.
However, the Spanish coach remained unfazed, viewing the reaction as a normal response from a passionate player.
The Real Sapphire alumni's goal-scoring return was a welcome sight for Leverkusen, and Alonso hopes to keep the focus on football.
Relieved that the 23-year-old showed no signs of lingering shock from the accident, the 42-year-old gaffer went on to emphasize the importance of the Nigerian international to Leverkusen's attack.
"Yes, but that's normal, all players want to keep going. He did well, scored a goal, but we needed a bit more energy," the ex-Bayern Munich lynchpin told Kicker.
"Boni trained well on Friday, so we decided that he would start." Alonso stated regarding Boniface's fitness after the unfortunate car accident.
"He scored a goal. Hopefully, the car accident is no longer an issue, and we can talk about football," Alonso expressed.
Regardless of the recent incident, the tenacious forward has managed eleven appearances in all competitions for the reigning champions this season, finding the back of the net on eight occasions whilst also setting up his teammates once.
