'No one can question where I'm from' - Super Falcons midfielder Payne on the story behind her tattoo
Published: October 31, 2024
Super Falcons midfielder Toni Payne has revealed the deep significance of her favorite tattoo, a map of Nigeria on her right arm, symbolizing her connection to her roots.
Born in the United States, Payne confessed that she didn't always feel connected to her Nigerian heritage. However, joining the national team and frequent visits to Nigeria have bridged that gap.
The 29-year-old further stated that the tattoo serves as a permanent reminder of her heritage and a declaration of pride in her roots.
Through her tattoo, Payne proudly asserted her Nigerian roots, solidifying her connection to the country and its people.
In an exclusive interview with ESPN Africa, Payne shared the story behind the meaningful ink.
"My favorite one is the shape of Nigeria. I love this one," she boldly affirmed when quizzed about her favourite body inscription.
"Growing up and being born in the US, I didn't always feel connected to the Nigerian culture, but since joining the national team and being able to go back to Nigeria often, I've been able to connect in that way.
"So, I just love to have it, and no one can question where I'm from; they don't even have to ask, they can see," she emphasized.
The AFC Ajax alum's journey to embracing her Nigerian identity has been marked by impressive football milestones.
The American-born lynchpin recently joined Everton in the England Women's Super League after a successful six-year stint with Sevilla in Spain's Liga F, where she scored 30 goals in 169 appearances.
Internationally, the former United States youth international has been capped 24 times by Nigeria, playing a crucial role in the Super Falcons' 2024 Olympic Games campaign and the FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
