Uefa sanctions Dutch club Twente after racist chants towards Dele-Bashiru and Lazio teammate
Published: November 02, 2024
According to UEFA's official website, Dutch club FC Twente has been handed a penalty and fines totaling €83,125 for racist and discriminatory behavior by their fans during the Europa League match against Lazio.
The sanctions follow investigations into racist chants directed at Lazio players, including Super Eagles midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and teammate Loum Tchaouna.
The club confirmed the sanctions, stating that part of the De Grolsch Veste stadium will remain closed for their upcoming home match against Royale Union Saint-Gilloise on November 28.
The closure affects the Vak-P stand, where supporters engaged in racist and discriminatory behavior.
The incident occurred during Twente's 2-0 loss to Lazio, with Dele-Bashiru and Tchaouna being targeted by racist chants.
UEFA's investigation found evidence of these chants, leading to the imposition of fines and stadium sanctions.
FC Twente expressed disappointment and sadness over the incident, emphasizing that such behavior is unacceptable and unworthy of the club.
In a statement on their website, the club vowed to identify and punish the perpetrators, recovering the fine from them.
The club also announced that those responsible for throwing drinking cups on the field have been identified and will face stadium bans.
Dele-Bashiru who registered an assist in Lazio's 2-0 win, has been impressive in the Europa League, scoring and assisting on his debut against Dynamo Kiev, providing three goal contributions in the competition so far.
