Dessers ends 8-game goal drought as holders Rangers beat Motherwell to reach League Cup final
Published: November 03, 2024
Super Eagles forward Cyriel Dessers has ended his eight-game goal drought as Rangers triumphed 2-1 over Motherwell to advance to the final of the League Cup.
The action kicked off in the 12th minute when Dessers came agonizingly came close to scoring, but his strike following a quick counterattack sailed just inches wide after a clever setup by Jefte.
Motherwell took the lead in the 25th minute when Andy Halliday capitalized on a layoff from Steve Seddon to find the back of the net.
Despite Rangers' efforts to respond, including another near miss from Dessers in the 44th minute, they headed into halftime trailing by a goal.
The second half saw a rejuvenated Rangers side, with Dessers finally breaking his scoring drought just minutes after the restart.
In the 49th minute, he calmly slotted the ball home after receiving a well-timed layoff from Barron, restoring parity and igniting the crowd.
Dessers' impactful performance, however, was cut short when he was substituted in the 67th minute for Danilo.
With the match hanging in the balance, it was Nedim Bajrami who secured the victory for Rangers, netting the winner in the 81st minute with a powerful shot into the roof of the net after connecting with a pass from Václav Černý.
With this goal, Dessers has now recorded eight goals and three assists in 18 appearances across all competitions this season.
His resurgence in form comes at a crucial time, as he aims to catch the eye of Austin Eguavoen, the interim manager of the Super Eagles, ahead of the upcoming 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Benin and Rwanda.
Nigeria leads the group with 10 points from four games.
