'I could have scored four' - Osimhen kicking himself for not scoring more against Tottenham
Published: November 08, 2024
Galatasaray earned their third win in the league phase of the Europa League on Thursday night, beating Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 at Ali Sami Yen Spor Kompleksi RAMS Park.
Victor Osimhen was the star of the show, scoring a brace in the hard-fought win against the north London club.
It marked the first time in his career that the reigning African Footballer of the Year has scored a brace in the first half of a game in a European competition.
After Will Lankshear cancelled out Yunus Akgün's early opener, Osimhen restored Galatasaray's lead with a clinical first time finish after he was teed up by Dries Mertens in the 31st minute.
In the 39th minute, Osimhen was well-placed to leap and cushion the ball into the net with his left instep from close range to double Galatasaray's advantage.
Although Osimhen made the difference and opened his goalscoring account in this season's Europa League, the Napoli loanee was disappointed not to score at least a hat-trick.
Speaking to TNT Sports after the game, the Galatasaray number 45 said: "I would have got like, if I am not mistaken, four goals. In the last minutes I lost a bit of focus but of course it's normal, that's why I was really angry at myself.
"I will go back, watch the clip and try to get better."
Last night's win takes Galatasaray above Tottenham Hotspur in the league phase table, having accumulated ten points from four matches.
Osimhen is confident that the Turkish Super Lig champions can go further in the competition.
"As a squad we really have that quality to continue to go forward, continue to build on this momentum because today is really a big win for us and I think we have the squad to go further and try to win the Europa League.
"It's not going to be easy because we also have a lot of obstacles. There are a lot of good teams we are going to face. We will be prepared for any of them and then we will be ready."
