The Super Eagles of Nigeria are on the brink of qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, needing just a point against Benin Republic on Thursday. 

While Nigeria are favorites, they must be wary of three key Benin Republic players who could upset their plans as a slip-up could prove costly for the Super Eagles.

Steve Mounié

FC Augsburg forward Steve Mounié, with two goals in the AFCON qualifiers, is a player Nigeria cannot afford to overlook.

The Benin Republic striker, a teammate of Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka at Augsburg, has registered an assist in eight appearances for his club this season. 

The 30-year-old's ability to hold up play and bring others into the game makes him a dangerous threat.

Olivier Verdon

FC Ludogorets Razgrad defender Olivier Verdon is a towering presence at the heart of Benin Republic's defense. 

The 29-year-old has 21 appearances in all competitions for his club this season. 

With ten appearances in Europe this season, the former Bordeaux central defender will very well prove to be a tough and uncompromising opponent who will be crucial in stopping Nigeria's attacking threats.

Sessi D'Almeida

Apollon Limassol's Sessi D'Almeida is a key figure in Benin Republic's midfield. 

The 28-year-old has started every single one of the seven league games he's been available for this season. 

The PSG alum's tenacity and imposing presence in the middle of the park make him a vital component of the team.
