Confirmed team news: Three key Super Eagles players including Lookman not available for selection v Rwanda
Published: November 17, 2024
The Nigeria Football Federation has announced that three key players from the Super Eagles will miss their upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Rwanda.
The match is scheduled for Monday, November 18, at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo by 5 pm.
Despite having already secured qualification for the tournament in Morocco after a 1-1 draw against Benin, Nigeria is determined to finish the group stage undefeated.
Currently, the Super Eagles top Group D with 11 points, having won three and drawn two of their five games.
The players confirmed to miss the clash include forward Ademola Lookman, goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, and defender Ola Aina.
Lookman sustained a knock during the recent match against Benin, which forced him to leave the Eagles camp after missing training on Saturday.
He has contributed two goals in the qualifiers, matching the tally of teammate Victor Osimhen.
Goalkeeper Nwabali has been excused from the squad to attend to family matters following the death of his father.
Meanwhile, Aina has returned to Nottingham Forest at the club's request to prepare for their crucial Premier League match against Arsenal.
In an official statement, the NFF remained optimistic that the remaining squad members possess the talent and determination to secure a victory against Rwanda, despite the absence of these crucial players.
Rwanda, in need of a win to keep their hopes alive, will be looking to capitalize on the Super Eagles' situation.
However, Nigeria aims to deliver a strong performance in front of their home fans, showcasing the depth and quality of their squad.
