'Energetic, quick, smart' - Eguavoen considering handing a start to Super Eagles top assister in Afconq
Published: November 17, 2024
Nigeria's caretaker coach Augustine Eguavoen has revealed that he is considering handing a start to Super Eagles' top assist provider in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, Moses Simon.
Simon has provided three assists in the Afcon qualifiers, bettered only by Mozambique left-back Bruno Langa who has tallied four.
The Nantes dazzler has found it difficult breaking into the starting lineup as he is behind Atalanta star Ademola Lookman in the pecking order of inverted wingers.
Simon's only start came against Libya in Uyo, while he came off the bench in the two games against Benin's Cheetahs and the draw in Rwanda.
With Lookman ruled out for Monday evening's game against the Wasps, fans and pundits are advocating for Simon to be included in the starting XI for the matchday six encounter.
Eguavoen highlighted Simon's attributes and admitted he is contemplating including the French-based player in the starting lineup.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference on Sunday, the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations winner said: "We played the game (against Benin) with eleven players and you are giving me only one now. What about the other ten? Give me the lineup tomorrow.
"We all know what Simon can bring to the team talent wise - energetic, quick, smart. I'll think about it."
For the matchday six clash at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Eguavoen has only 18 outfield players at his disposal, with Ademola Lookman and Ola Aina returning to their respective clubs following the 1-1 stalemate with Benin.
