Troost-Ekong praises ex-centre-back partner Leon Balogun; Eguavoen not ruling out return of Rangers star
Published: November 17, 2024
Austin Eguavoen, the interim manager of the Super Eagles, has not dismissed the possibility of Leon Balogun returning to the national team.
Eguavoen's comments came as the Super Eagles prepare to face Rwanda on Monday, November 18, in Uyo by 5 pm.
Balogun, who made his international debut in 2014 and last represented Nigeria in 2022, has not officially announced his retirement from the national team.
The 36-year-old has made 46 appearances for Nigeria, scoring once, and continues to impress at the club level with Rangers in Scotland.
Despite being overlooked for international duty, he has established himself as a key player, featuring in 11 matches across all competitions this season at Rangers.
In the pre-match press conference ahead of the clash against Rwanda, Eguavoen left the door open for the potential return of the veteran defender ahead of the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations tournament and World Cup qualifiers.
When asked about Balogun's potential recall to the squad, Eguavoen remarked, "It is possible, you cannot rule out."
William Troost-Ekong, a fellow defender and close friend of Balogun, praised his professionalism and expressed a desire to partner with him again on the national team.
"Leon is a fantastic player. He helped me a lot. We had some amazing times. He is still going strong at 36," Troost-Ekong stated.
He acknowledged the challenges Balogun has faced, including injuries, but commended his dedication to maintaining a high level of performance.
"It is not easy to be playing at a club like Rangers with the pressure that he is on.
"He had some issues with injury but very professional to continue to still be playing at 36.
“I miss him as a good friend but we're still in contact and I still see him even when I am not here,” Troost-Ekong said.
Currently sitting atop their group with 11 points from five games, the Super Eagles have already secured qualification for the upcoming biennial tournament in Morocco.
