Habeeb Ogunneye: RB named in 10 gameday squads by Ten Hag captains Man Utd to win v Altrincham
Published: November 20, 2024
Talented Nigerian right-back Habeeb Ogunneye wore the captain's armband as Manchester United U21s thrashed the first team of Altrincham 4-0 in the inaugural National League Cup on Tuesday, November 19.
Ogunneye was not the only player of Nigerian descent that started for the Red Devils as he was joined in the starting lineup by Spanish-born center forward Victor Musa.
Chido Obi-Martin was on international duty with Denmark U18s and was therefore unavailable for selection for yesterday's game at the J. Davidson Stadium in Cheshire.
Thanks to a brace from Ethan Ennis, United were two goals up at halftime and netted two more in the second half, with Amir Ibragimov getting on the scoresheet before Ennis grabbed his hat-trick in the first minute of stoppage time.
Pushing for a first-team place, Ogunneye has been selected for competitive matches but has yet to make his professional debut.
Last season, with Erik ten Hag in the United dugout, he was a non-playing substitute in nine matches across all competitions.
In the current season, the English-Nigerian defender made the trip to Istanbul for the Europa League game against Bright Osayi-Samuel's Fenerbahce, but stayed on the bench once again.
Ogunneye has frequently trained with the first-team stars at Manchester United, although he primarily plays for the development squad.
