'They must be competitive' - Obafemi questions Super Eagles players' commitment after loss to Rwanda
Published: November 23, 2024
Nigeria's shocking 2-1 defeat to Rwanda in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier has sparked widespread criticism, with former Super Eagles player Abiodun Obafemi adding his voice to the discontent.
The 1996 Olympic gold medalist has expressed his frustration with the lack of commitment displayed by some Super Eagles players, questioning their dedication to the national team.
The loss to Rwanda, ranked 126th in the world, was a stunning upset, especially given the fact that Nigeria was the home team.
The departures of key players like Ola Aina and Ademola Lookman, who were granted permission to return to their respective clubs, along with star striker Victor Osimhen starting on the bench, highlighted coach Eguavoen's poor decisions, which ultimately backfired.
The 1994 AFCON winner's intentions to give fringe players a chance, ended in disaster as Nigeria suffered their first-ever defeat to Rwanda.
Obafemi, who spoke to Brila FM, was scathing in his criticism of the players, emphasizing the need for competitiveness among the players.
"We expected so much from these guys based on their performances with their clubs, but when they come to Nigeria, they do what they cannot in their teams. It's a very big concern," Obafemi said.
"They must be competitive. I don't understand why they are selecting games".
The defeat to Rwanda has significant implications for Nigeria's immediate aspirations.
The Super Eagles now face the daunting task of winning all their remaining six matches to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
The pressure is mounting, especially after Nigeria's failure to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
In all previous World Cup qualifiers played by the Super Eagles leading to next year's match day five, they have failed to register a single win, with Rwanda currently topping group C on goal difference as they are currently level on points with South Africa and Republic of Benin.
