Liga F: Nigeria international forward on target against European champions Barcelona
Published: November 24, 2024
Super Falcons forward Rinsola Babajide found the back of the net on Sunday afternoon as Barcelona triumphed over UD Tenerife with a commanding 5-1 victory at Estadi Johan Cruyff.
Babajide quickly made her mark in the match, scoring just two minutes in. She capitalized on a well-placed pass from Mari Jose, following excellent buildup play on the right flank.
Her goal gave Tenerife a surprising lead, igniting hopes for an upset against the reigning European champions.
However, Barcelona quickly responded, equalizing in the 37th minute with a stunning strike from Irene Paredes.
The Spanish international unleashed a powerful shot from outside the box, placing it perfectly into the bottom right corner, leaving Tenerife goalkeeper, Echezarreta Fernandez, with no chance.
Just three minutes later, the home side took the lead when Ewa Pajor tapped in after a series of intricate passes that carved open the Tenerife defense.
The momentum shifted entirely in Barcelona's favour, and they extended their lead further before halftime with a penalty from Graham Hansen, who calmly converted from the spot amidst the tension in the stadium.
In the second half, Barcelona continued to dominate, with Claudia Pina scoring the fourth goal in the 60th minute.
The forward received a cross from the left flank and fired a precise shot into the bottom corner, much to the disappointment of Fernandez, who struggled to keep the onslaught at bay.
The scoring was capped off in the 77th minute when Esmee Brugts was allowed too much space inside the box, firing a shot past Fernandez to secure a comprehensive 5-1 victory for the Catalan giants.
Despite the heavy defeat, Rinsola Babajide made a notable impact, displaying her skills and determination throughout the match before being substituted in the second half.
The Super Falcons forward has been a key player for Tenerife this season, netting three goals and providing one assist in nine league appearances.
With this victory, Barcelona sit comfortably at the top of Liga F, boasting a perfect record and accumulating 33 points from 11 matches.
Meanwhile, UD Tenerife find themselves in seventh place, with 16 points from the same number of games.
