'I'm glad'- Former Tottenham defender happy Chelsea missed out on summer move for Osimhen
Published: November 28, 2024Former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Jason Cundy has expressed his delight at Chelsea missing out on Victor Osimhen in the summer transfer window, due to the prolific goalscoring form of Nicolas Jackson.
The Blues were desperate to get the signature of Osimhen until the closure of the last transfer window, in a bid to strengthen their attacking department.
The 25-year-old went on to sign a loan deal with Galatasaray as a result of the Blues and other suitors missing out on his signature.
Luckily, Chelsea haven't rued missing out on the acquisition of the Super Eagles forward as Jackson has been delivering the goods and Christopher Nkunku has also chipped in some goals.
The Senegalese forward has been Enzo Maresca's first-choice striker and has repaid the faith the Italian tactician has in him.
He has chipped in seven goals and three assists in 10 Premier League games this season and is Chelsea's joint top-scorer in the competition, alongside Cole Palmer.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Cundy expressed his elation with the form of the Senegalese international, stating that he would not have been in his excellent goalscoring form if the Blues had gotten Osimhen.
"I’m glad we didn’t get Osimhen in the summer because if we did, we wouldn’t be seeing the numbers of Jackson is putting up," Cunday said.
"But there is a case to be said. Do we need a backup? And Nkunku right now isn’t that backup? And that’s the problem we have as a squad
"We don’t really have a genuine backup for Jackson, but because he’s so young. How do you back up someone so young.
"So therefore, if you bring someone in, you got to bring someone who’s going to go over Jackson. Who is that player?"
In an effort to keep Jackson fresh for Premier League matches, Maresca has excluded him from participating in the UEFA Conference League, and he will not feature against Heidenheim on Thursday.
Though the Stamford outfit have still been credited with an interest in Osimhen, the situation may change if the former Villarreal forward keeps delivering the goods for the two-time European champions.
