'Apart from the red card against AC Milan' - Super Eagles star Onyedika proud to play in Champions League
Published: November 29, 2024
Club Brugge midfielder Raphael Onyedika has shared his pride in competing in the UEFA Champions League, despite facing challenges during the contest against AC Milan.
The Nigerian international, who has played a pivotal role in Club Brugge's midfield, was sent off during a high-stakes encounter with AC Milan at the San Siro, following a foul on Tijjani Reijnders in the 40th minute of the match.
This red card was an unfortunate event that tested the resilience of the FC Ebedei product who made his Champions League debut against Bayer Leverkusen in September 2022.
In an interview with the Super Eagles media team, Onyedika reflected on the experience, describing the Champions League as "every player's dream" and a competition he has always aspired to play in.
"It's a competition that almost every player wants to play in and you have the opportunity to show yourself, play with top teams and top players," Onyedika said to the Super Eagles media team.
"It's like a dream come true, apart from the red card against AC Milan. It was unfortunate but sometimes it happens, something that you cannot control. It's one of my proudest moments playing in the Champions League."
The midfielder also emphasized the ambition of his Club Brugge side, revealing the team's determination to make an impact.
"Club Brugge is also a big team. We don't go there to just to participate, that we played Champions League.
"We also go there to create history and also go as far as we can because last two seasons, we went to the knockout stage and then Benfica eliminated us.
"We are also aiming to qualify for the knockout stage, like the last time, so we are not going there to participate. We are going there to win and also challenge as much as possible."
Onyedika's performances this season have been integral to Club Brugge's midfield, contributing one goal and two assists across 19 games in all competitions.
As the team looks to make a deep run in the Champions League, the Super Eagles star will be central to their efforts to achieve their ambitions.
