Dessers battles striking rival Igamane, Diomande and Bajrami for Rangers Goal of the Month
Published: December 04, 2024
Nigerian international Cyriel Dessers has had his stunning strike in Rangers' 1-1 draw against Olympiacos, which helped them secure a valuable point in a tough away fixture in the UEFA Europa League last month, nominated for the club's Goal of the Month award for November.
The match, played at the Stadio Georgios Karaiskakis, saw Olympiacos take the lead through a powerful shot from Moroccan forward Ayoub El Kaabi.
However, Dessers, who had been struggling with a goal drought at the time, stepped up to the occasion and produced a moment of magic.
Receiving a well-timed pass from Vaclav Cerny, the 29-year-old executed a skillful touch to bypass the defender and then calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner of the net.
This crucial goal not only salvaged a point for Rangers but also provided a much-needed boost to Dessers's own confidence.
Despite netting ten goals across all competitions for Rangers this season, Dessers has faced criticism and fan pressure due to his poor finishing.
His last appearance for the Super Eagles was in March, and he was surprisingly omitted from the squad for the recent AFCON qualifiers, with Umar Sadiq preferred ahead of him, despite the latter's underwhelming form at Real Sociedad.
Competing with Dessers for the award are his main striking rival Hamza Igamane, Mohammed Diomande with his Europa League goal against OGC Nice, and Nedim Bajrami for his League Cup strike against Motherwell.
