Southampton's Aribo emulates Iheanacho, Ndidi, Iwobi, Awoniyi, Dennis with goal against Chelsea in PL
Published: December 04, 2024
Joe Aribo was on the scoresheet but couldn't prevent Southampton losing 5-1 to Chelsea in the Premier League fixture played at St.Mary's on Wednesday evening.
Axel Disasi gave Chelsea the lead, heading the ball home from Enzo Fernández's corner-kick in the 7th minute.
Four minutes later, Aribo put the home side back on level terms, slotting the ball calmly past Filip Jörgensen from Kyle Walker-Peters’ pass.
By doing so, he joined Kelechi Iheanacho, Alex Iwobi, Wilfred Ndidi, Taiwo Awoniyi, and Emmanuel Dennis as the Super Eagles players to have scored against Chelsea in the Premier League.
It was also the Nigerian midfielder first goal against the two-time European champions though he has only played against them once before today.
Christopher Nkunku restored the Blues’ lead, latching on Noni Madueke's pass to put the ball into the empty net after Southampton had lost possession in a dangerous area.
Madueke gave Chelsea a two-goal lead before the end of the first half, picking out the bottom corner after receiving a pass from João Félix.
Two late goals from Cole Palmer and Jadon Sancho added the icing on the cake for the Stamford Bridge outfit
Before tonight's fixture, Aribo had not started a Premier League game since the clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers last month.
He registered his first goal of the campaign in the 3-2 loss to Leicester City and now has two goals in the Premier League this term.
