'Had an amazing season' - Lookman insists Boniface should have been nominated for African POTY
Published: December 11, 2024
Ademola Lookman believes that Victor Boniface should have been nominated for the African Men's Footballer of the Year award.
Boniface played a pivotal role as Bayer Leverkusen won their first-ever German Bundesliga title last term, staying unbeaten in domestic competitions throughout the season.
The Nigerian striker scored 21 goals in 34 games across all competitions for the Black and Reds, and was awarded the Bundesliga Rookie of the Season.
He suffered an injury which disrupted his brilliant debut season for Leverkusen and that kept him on the sidelines for almost three months.
The 23-year-old missed the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations due to his lack of fitness but was able to recover in time to help Bayer Leverkusen win the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal.
Despite his exploits for Bayer Leverkusen, he was not nominated for the African Men's Footballer of the Year.
Speaking with Sporty TV, Lookman believes the Leverkusen ace should have been nominated for the award.
"Obviously Boniface, my teammate, had an amazing season last year. I think with his personal achievements, personal goals, and also winning two titles last year with Leverkusen.
"They were unbeaten in their league, special, maybe he could have been nominated for sure but you know I am not the one that makes the rules, you know."
Asked about who he thought would have won the award if Boniface had been nominated, the in-form forward said: "I am not the one that makes the decisions, you know; it is just you guys."
Lookman continued his excellent form for Atalanta in the UEFA Champions League clash with Real Madrid yesterday. He scored a goal in the fixture but the Italian outfit lost 3-2 to the Spanish giants.
