'I'm a box-to-box midfielder' - Dele-Bashiru reveals he's comfortable in defensive and attacking duties
Published: December 13, 2024Fisayo Dele-Bashiru was arguably the best player on the pitch as Lazio defeated Ajax Amsterdam 3-1 on matchday six in the Europa League league phase on Thursday night.
The Nigeria international scored a crucial second goal for the Biancocelesti in the 52nd minute, three minutes after Bertrand Traoré brought the game back to parity.
Dele-Bashiru was at the back post to fire substitute Zaccagni's low cross into the net from a tight angle.
It looked like Ajax goalkeeper Remko Pasveer had saved Dele-Bashiru's shot but goal-line technology revealed the ball had crossed the line.
The Manchester City academy graduate is usually deployed as an attacking midfielder for the Super Eagles and can also step into a central midfield role when the situation demands it.
Dele-Bashiru revealed that he prefers playing as a box-to-box midfielder, adding that he is comfortable with both offensive and defensive duties in the middle of the pack.
Speaking post-match after the victory against Ajax, as quoted by fantacalcio.it, Dele-Bashiru stated: "A beautiful victory against a strong team like Ajax.
"We were good at always believing in ourselves, I scored a lucky goal. I'm happy to have scored again, now I have even more confidence in my abilities. When I arrived the fans didn't know me very well, I'm doing my best.
"I'm a box-to-box midfielder, I feel good both in defense and offense, but if I score even better. Who do I prefer to play with? It doesn't matter, I feel good with everyone".
Dele-Bashiru has been impressive in the Europa League, with his goal against Ajax Amsterdam bringing his total goal contributions to four in as many matches.
Thanks to their win against Ajax Amsterdam, Lazio secured their place in either the round of 16 or the knockout phase play-offs of the Europa League.
