Sevilla to sign winger as cover for injured Super Eagles forward Ejuke, confirms Pimienta
Published: December 13, 2024
Sevilla head coach García Pimienta has confirmed the club’s intention to strengthen their squad in the winter transfer window, following the injury to key winger Chidera Ejuke and the impending retirement of veteran Jesús Navas.
Ejuke, who joined Sevilla on a permanent deal in the summer after loan spells at Hertha BSC and Royal Antwerp, has been a standout performer for the Andalusian side.
Known for his electrifying dribbling and creativity, the Super Eagles star quickly became a fan favourite.
However, his momentum was halted by an injury sustained during Sevilla’s heavy 5-1 defeat to Barcelona in October, ruling him out of Saturday's La Liga clash against Celta Vigo and raising concerns over the team’s depth in wide areas.
In a press conference ahead of the Celta Vigo match, Pimienta acknowledged the growing need to reinforce the wing position.
He lauded Jesús Navas, who is set to retire in December, for his commitment to the team, even stepping into a more advanced role to cover for the team’s shortfall.
"Jesús was so honourable that he only renewed for six months, only until December, to lead and direct the path that he has marked by example," Pimienta remarked, as reported by Estadio Deportivo.
"We were already counting on his absence for January, I have used him more as a winger and we have already spoken with the club about the need to sign a winger in the winter market.
"We are left without Jesús, Lucas Ocampos left and unfortunately we also lost Ejuke (due to injury). We have in mind to reinforce that position."
The Super Eagles winger will miss the clash against Celta Vigo after missing Friday's training session.
Meanwhile, teammate Kelechi Iheanacho participated fully in training and is expected to be available for selection at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium.
Before his injury, Ejuke had registered one goal in nine La Liga appearances for Sevilla.
