Ex-Liverpool GK reveals secret behind saving Arokodare's penalty in Jupiler Pro League clash
Published: December 15, 2024
Club Brugge goalkeeper Simon Mignolet has explained how he saved Tolu Arokodare's penalty during Club Brugge's 2-0 win over Racing Genk in the Jupiler Pro-League clash played at the Jan Breydel Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Arokodare had the chance to open the scoring in the 73rd minute when Joel Ordonez committed a foul in the penalty area. After the VAR check, the referee awarded a spot-kick.
The Nigerian striker stepped up to convert and attempted to place in the bottom right corner, but Mignolet did enough to prevent him from scoring.
His miss proved costly as Club Brugge took the lead four minutes later through a bullet header from Brandon Mechele.
Andreas Skov Olsen sealed the maximum points, four minutes before stoppage time.
Speaking after the game, Mignolet explained how he prevented Arokodare from beating him from the penalty spot as his save helped Club Brugge get the victory.
In quotes relayed by voetbalkrant.com, the former Liverpool shot-stopper said: "There were two possibilities where he would kick. I said that I would stay standing and he should not kick through the middle like Heymans.
"Luckily he didn't do it today. But we deserved to win today. We were the better team, but that penalty was an important phase. Luckily I was able to save it."
Arokodare missed the opportunity to score his first goal from the penalty spot this season.
None of the 10 goals he has scored in the Jupiler Pro-League this term has come from the spot kick.
The victory moves Club Brugge within one point from Genk who are the present table-toppers.
