13 goals in 20 games: Racing Genk marksman Arokodare plays down top scorer ambitions
Published: December 26, 2024
Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare has stated that he is not eyeing the Jupiler Pro-League top-scorer's award.
Arokodare is leading Racing Genk's quest for the league title for the first time since the 2018/2019 campaign and the fifth one in the club's history.
He joined the Belgian giants in January 2023, replacing Paul Onuachu, who was sold to Southampton, but did not hit the ground running and was hampered by injuries, missing six games as a result.
The Lagos-born striker got better last season but could only manage 15 goals across all competitions as Genk finished outside the continental places after the play-off.
He seems to have finally adapted to the demands of the Belgian top flight this term, notching 13 goals in 20 games to lead the top-scorers chart after netting twice in Genk's 2-2 draw with Royal Antwerp today.
Speaking ahead of the clash, Arokodare has distanced himself from aiming to win the top scorer's award and would not be bothered if he does not score.
"It really doesn't matter who scores. If I score, I'm happy. If I don't score but give an assist, I'm happy with that. The top scorer's ranking comes after that.” he told DAZN via voetbalprimeur.
Onuachu, Joseph Akpala, and Tosin Dosunmu are the only Nigerians to win the Belgian top-flight top-scorer's award.
Onuachu holds the record for most goals scored in a league season, scoring 33 goals in the 2020/2021 campaign and also won the Belgian Golden Shoe, the best player in the division award.
