Dele-Bashiru's goal helps Lazio set 2024-25 Serie A record but African POTY Lookman spoils the fun
Published: December 28, 2024Super Eagles midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru has solidified his reputation as a rising star in Serie A with a standout performance in Lazio's recent clash against Atalanta.
Dele-Bashiru showcased his talent with a spectacular goal that set the tone for the game against Atalanta.
The 23-year-old midfielder found the back of the net in the 27th minute, delivering an incredible shot that left Atalanta's goalkeeper, Marco Carnesecchi, with no chance.
Despite Dele-Bashiru's impressive opener, his goal did not prove to be the winning goal as newly crowned African Footballer of the Year Ademola Lookman provided a crucial assist in the 88th minute to deny The Eagles their 12th league win of the campaign.
The match ended in a hard-fought draw, but Dele-Bashiru's performance stood out, marking his fourth goal of the season in just fourteen appearances across all competitions.
According to football statisticians Opta, Dele-Bashiru has become the sixth Lazio player to score more than three all-competition goals in the 2024-2025 season, a record among Serie A teams.
With the strike, Lazio rank above all Serie A clubs and are only surpassed by Arsenal and Manchester United in the top five European leagues.
Having previously struggled to find his footing since joining Lazio from Hatayspor during the summer transfer window, this goal is expected to significantly boost Dele-Bashiru's confidence and propel him to maintain consistent performances in the league moving forward.
