English-Nigerian-Togolese forward Hungbo describes himself as an entertainer after joining Wigan
Published: January 03, 2025
Through official channels, EFL League One club Wigan Athletic have announced the signing of Joseph Hungbo.
By putting pen to paper on a three-and-a-half-year contract with the Latics, Hungbo ended his association with German 2. Bundesliga club 1. FC Nürnberg.
Born in London to a Togolese mother and Nigerian father, Hungbo spent the first half of the 2024-2025 season on loan at Rotherham United, where he made eighteen matches in all competitions.
The 24-year-old joined FC Nürnberg during the summer transfer window of 2023 and made his first appearance for the club in the opening matchday against Hansa Rostock.
Unfortunately, an injury in October 2023 kept the winger out of action for several months, limiting his appearances for the club to seventeen.
Hungbo spent the formative years of his career at Premier League club Crystal Palace before transferring to Watford in the summer of 2019.
In his first words as a player of Wigan Athletic, the pacey forward described himself as an entertainer and vowed to positively contribute in the final third.
"I am an entertainer. I like to get at defenders and make the crowd jump out of their seats,” Hungbo stated.
"I like to create chances, score goals, and help the team get up to the pitch. I bring a lot of energy into the side, and a little bit of something different.
"I definitely feel that the philosophy and playing style will bring out the good attributes that I have."
Apart from the aforementioned teams, Hungbo also lists Margate, Aldershot Town, Ross County and Huddersfield Town as his previous clubs.
His season-long loan spell at Rotherham United was cut short before he made the move to Wigan.
