Super Falcons lynchpin pens emotional message as she bids farewell to Pittsburgh Panthers

Super Falcons midfield lynchpin Deborah Abiodun, has announced her departure from NCAA Atlantic Coast Conference club Pittsburgh Panthers, with an emotional farewell message on her official social media channels.

The 21-year-old joined the club from NWFL giants Rivers Angels in 2022, under the guidance of former Super Falcons coach Randy Waldrum. 

The move to Panthers came on the back of her stunning performances at the 2022 FIFA U20 Women's World, catching the eye of the then Super Falcons coach who was coincidentally the manager of the NCAA club.

Last season, Abiodun tallied twenty-two appearances for Pittsburgh Panthers, starting nineteen of them and registering six goals and three assists in all competitions. 

Her performances earned her a place in the USC All-Atlantic Region team, as well a sixteenth-place finish in the TopSoccerDrawer Freshman Top 100 Midseasom list, amongst other recognitions.

Breaking the news via her official Instagram account, Abiodun expressed her gratitude to the club for their roles in shaping her development. 

She also went on to acknowledge her support for the club in their future endeavours despite her departure.

“With a heart overflowing with gratitude and appreciation, I want to take a moment to thank everyone who has been part of my incredible journey here at Pittsburgh. Knowing each one of you has been a blessing I will cherish forever," Abiodun stated.

"To my Coaches, Professors, teammates who have become sisters, the supportive Teammates' families, devoted Fans, and the amazing Staff of @pitt_wsoc you have all played a significant role in shaping me into a better player, student, teammate, sister, and person. 

"Your unwavering encouragement, guidance, and belief in me have meant the world, and I am endlessly grateful for the moments we've shared."

"The University of Pittsburgh will always hold a special place in my heart, as it has given me not only unforgettable memories but also the relationships and lessons that will last a lifetime. 

"Thank you for making this chapter of my life so memorable, meaningful, and truly extraordinary."

As at the time of this announcement, her next destination remains unclear. However, the announcement of her new club is expected to follow in the coming days, given her talent. 

She represented Nigeria at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, as well as the Paris 2024 summer Olympic Games.
