Ajax Amsterdam make transfer decision on Super Eagles hopeful Akpom
Published: January 06, 2025
Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam have reportedly made a transfer decision on Super Eagles hopeful Chuba Akpom ahead of the close of the January transfer window.
The four-time European champions are looking to offload several players this January transfer window, and Akpom is one of the four players on the chopping block.
According to reports from De Telegraaf via VoetbalPrimeur, Ajax are open to selling Akpom, along with Benjamin Tahirovic, Owen Wijndal, and Branco van den Boomen.
The Amsterdam-based club is facing financial constraints, and technical director Alex Kroes has made it clear that they have limited funds to do business on the transfer market.
However, Kroes is hoping to welcome Real Valladolid attacker Raúl Moro to the club soon, with negotiations reportedly in full swing.
Akpom, who has been linked with a move to Germany and a potential return to England, has struggled to find his form in the Eredivisie this season.
He has managed just three goal contributions in 14 league appearances, and has gone nine league matches without scoring.
Despite his recent struggles, the Hale End Academy product has been a valuable player for Ajax since his arrival from Middlesbrough in the summer of 2023.
He has registered 63 appearances for the club, scoring 22 goals and recording four assists along the way.
In a recent friendly match against VfB Stuttgart, Akpom showed glimpses of his quality, scoring a late equalizer to salvage a draw for Ajax.
However, his future at the club remains uncertain, and it remains to be seen whether he will be able to turn his fortunes around in the second half of the season.
Ajax's preference is to sell the four players, but so far, they have only received interest from clubs looking to loan.
As a result, Kroes is exploring alternative options, including loan deals with a mandatory option to buy or even multi-season rentals.
