Forgotten Super Falcons defender Zogg catching the eye at Perth Glory, bags award
Published: January 06, 2025
Super Falcons defender Onyinyechi Zogg has been recognized for her outstanding performance in Perth Glory's recent match against Wellington Phoenix in the A-League Women.
Despite her team's 2-0 defeat, Zogg's solid defensive display earned her the Coates Player of the Match award.
The 27-year-old Swiss-born defender has been impressive for Perth Glory this season, featuring in eight league games and putting in a string of masterclass performances.
Although she is yet to score her first goal for the club, her defensive prowess has been instrumental in Glory's campaign.
Zogg's performance against Wellington Phoenix was particularly notable, as she helped keep the hosts at bay during the first half amidst challenging weather conditions.
However, despite her best efforts, Glory ultimately succumbed to a 2-0 defeat, with goals from Grace Jale and Olivia Fergusson sealing the win for Wellington Phoenix.
The loss extended Perth Glory's winless streak in the Ninja A-League to three games, with their last victory coming in early December against Adelaide United.
The team now sits at tenth place in the league standings with eight points from nine games played.
Zogg signed for the Australian club in August 2024, following the termination of her contract with Swiss club Servette whom she joined in January that same year.
She previously played for several clubs in Switzerland, France, Germany, and Israel, gaining Champions League experience with FC Zurich in 2021.
On the international stage, Zogg made her senior debut for Nigeria in June 2021, featuring in a friendly against Jamaica.
Although she has not featured for the Super Falcons since then, her recent performances for Perth Glory may have put her back on the radar of the national team selectors.
