Nwaneri's injury: Three Arsenal players that can step in for Saka against Newcastle United
Published: January 06, 2025
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has confirmed that Ethan Nwaneri will miss the Gunners' Carabao Cup clash against Newcastle on Tuesday due to a muscle injury.
The teenage midfielder, who has been an emerging talent for the club, is set to be sidelined for a few weeks.
Speaking at a press conference, Arteta provided an update on Nwaneri's condition, saying, "Unfortunately he's picked up a muscular injury, he will be out for a few weeks."
Nwaneri’s absence, combined with Bukayo Saka’s unavailability, leaves Arteta with a selection headache.
Allnigeriasoccer.com presents four players who could step up to fill the gap.
Gabriel Martinelli
Brazilian winger Gabriel Martinelli is the most experienced option to step in on the right wing. Arteta turned to him during the Brighton match after Nwaneri’s injury, and the 23-year-old is likely to be called upon again.
However, Martinelli has faced criticism this season for inconsistent performances. With six goals and two assists in 26 appearances across all competitions, the expectations on him remain high.
Against Newcastle, Martinelli will have a chance to make a statement and regain the trust of Arsenal fans.
Nathan Butler-Oyedeji
Nathan Butler-Oyedeji, a promising talent from Arsenal’s U21 setup, is another candidate.
The 22-year-old Nigerian forward has been in sensational form in the Premier League 2, contributing seven goals and six assists in just nine games.
Despite his impressive performances at the youth level, Butler-Oyedeji has yet to make his first-team debut.
His versatility across the forward line and familiarity with Arteta’s system make him a strong contender to feature in the squad against Newcastle.
Andre Harriman-Annous
Andre Harriman-Annous, unarguably the best U18 player this season, has also emerged as a potential option.
The 17-year-old striker has scored five goals and provided two assists in just five U18 Premier League matches this season.
While primarily a center-forward, Annous is capable of playing across the front three, thanks to his speed, strength, and tactical awareness.
His ability to adapt could earn him a spot in Arteta’s plans for the Newcastle game.
