Rangers boss put off by the idea of signing 37yo Man Utd CB, citing Leon Balogun as key factor

Leon Balogun could have a new rival at Rangers as the Scottish Premiership giants are considering a move for very experienced Manchester United central defender Jonny Evans in the January transfer window.

Rangers manager Philippe Clement is facing a defensive crisis at the moment with Leon Balogun, James Tavernier, John Souttar, Neraysho Kasanwirjo and Dujon Sterling picking up injuries.

The 37-year-old Evans is being considered as a possible transfer option to help address Rangers' defensive crisis.

According to Daily Record, a member of the club hierarchy suggested Jonny Evans to the manager, but Clement is reportedly hesitant due to the Manchester United defender's age, especially with Balogun already serving as an experienced figure in the squad.

To strengthen the squad, Clement prioritizes a younger defender rather than opting for the Manchester United player.

Balogun, 36, returned for a second spell at Rangers in the summer of 2023, a year after leaving the Light Blues to Queens Park Rangers.

This season, the Nigeria international has played in seventeen games across all competitions, eleven of which he started, but has not figured for Rangers in their last three matches in the Scottish top-flight due to fitness issues.

The future of Balogun at Rangers is up in the air, with his contract expiring at the end of the 2024-2025 season.
