'Most exciting duo' - Oliseh names two Newcastle stars who impressed him in win v Arsenal
Published: January 08, 2025
Nigeria legend Sunday Oliseh has picked out two Newcastle United players who impressed him during the 2-0 win over Arsenal in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semifinal at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night.
The Magpies took a big step towards qualifying for the final of the Carabao Cup, thanks to goals either side of halftime from Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon, albeit against the run of play.
Eight minutes before halftime, Martin Dúbravka's free kick was lofted and headed on, dropping for Isak in the center of the box, and the player, who has been linked with Arsenal several times, slotted home from close range.
Newcastle United found themselves in a good position five minutes after the restart when Anthony Gordon doubled the advantage after Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya parried Isak's shot.
Isak is one of the most in-form Premier League players, having scored in eight of his last nine games across all competitions, while Gordon has also impressed this season with nine goal involvements in 19 top-flight appearances.
Former Borussia Dortmund midfielder Oliseh praised the Swede and the Liverpool native after the game, highlighting that they are among the most underrated players in the Premier League.
He said on X: "Sad day for Arsenal fans losing out to Newcastle, but I strongly feel these two players, Isak and Gordon of Newcastle, are arguably the most exciting duo and slightly most underrated players of the Premier League this season.
"Just love the variety they bring each game and Isak is currently my favorite player of the Premier League. What a bunch of Talent!"
Isak is one of the hottest properties in European football at the moment, with top clubs such as Arsenal, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain all credited with an interest in the forward, who was teammates with retired Nigeria international Chinedu Obasi at Swedish club AIK.
Alex Iwobi's former teammate at Everton, Anthony Gordon, has justified the hefty transfer fee Newcastle paid to acquire him with a series of impressive performances for the Magpies.
