'That's a shame' - Bayer Leverkusen coach confirms Boniface will miss Borussia Dortmund clash
Published: January 09, 2025
Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso has confirmed that striker Victor Boniface will miss the club’s crucial Bundesliga match against Borussia Dortmund.
Speaking during Thursday's pre-match press conference, Alonso expressed his disappointment over the Nigerian forward's unavailability due to injury.
Alonso was quoted as saying by German newspaper Bild, "We were hoping that he would be back in training on January 2nd. That's a shame.
"We have to be patient so that he gets back to his best shape and we get a better feel for the injury. The most important thing now is that we support him."
The coach acknowledged the setback but stressed the need for caution in Boniface’s recovery process.
Despite initial hopes of his return early in the new year, Alonso confirmed that the striker would also likely miss Leverkusen’s upcoming home fixtures against Mainz on January 14 and Borussia Mönchengladbach on January 18.
"Normally, it's not enough for next week," Alonso stated, emphasizing that the recovery timeline remains uncertain.
When pressed on Boniface’s potential return date, Alonso referred to the club’s medical staff.
"I don't know. It's better for the doctor to ask, but Boni needs a little more time, I can say that."
The absence of Boniface is a significant blow for Leverkusen, as the striker has been a key player for the team this season.
However, Alonso expressed confidence in the squad’s ability to adapt, stating that patience and support are critical in ensuring the forward’s full recovery.
Leverkusen, currently competing for the Bundesliga title, will face a formidable challenge against Borussia Dortmund without one of their most influential attackers.
The match could prove crucial in the race for the top spot, and Boniface’s absence adds to the complexity of the encounter.
