Turkish football expert claims contract issues affected Osayi-Samuel's performance v Kasimpasa
Published: January 10, 2025
Turkish football expert Halil Özer has shed light on the contract situation of Nigerian fullback Bright Osayi-Samuel, whose deal with Fenerbahce is set to expire at the end of the season.
Osayi-Samuel, who joined the Turkish giants in January 2021 as a free agent, signed a four-and-a-half-year contract with the Yellow Canaries.
Under the guidance of Jose Mourinho, the Super Eagles defender has remained a key figure in the squad, featuring in Fenerbahce's recent 3-0 victory over Kasımpaşa in the Ziraat Turkish Cup.
So far this season, he has made twenty appearances across all competitions, contributing one assist and showcasing both defensive solidity and offensive prowess.
Despite his consistent performances, Fenerbahce have yet to secure a contract extension with Osayi-Samuel, whose deal is set to expire in less than six months.
Reports suggest the club has offered him an annual salary of 2 million euros, a figure the Nigerian international has reportedly rejected.
The unresolved contract talks have sparked concerns at the club, with Halil Özer emphasizing that the situation has begun to affect Osayi-Samuel's on-field displays.
Speaking during his analysis on Milliyet, as reported by MSN, Özer noted a decline in the fullback's performance during the match against Kasımpaşa.
"What caught my attention is that Osayi played less than expected again," said Özer.
"This guy was a player who came and went, was very effective, especially in attacking actions, had high energy, and contributed to the result.
However, it is obvious that this contract has upset him. I do not understand that either. You focus on your football, but he does not."
With his contract nearing its end, Osayi-Samuel is now free to negotiate with other clubs and potentially secure a free transfer at the conclusion of the season.
His unresolved future remains a point of contention, as Fenerbahce risk losing a valuable asset amid the ongoing contract standoff.
