Everton alums Yakubu, Anichebe react to the return of David Moyes as Toffees manager
Published: January 11, 2025
Retired Nigeria internationals Yakubu Aiyegbeni and Victor Anichebe have expressed their reactions to the return of David Moyes as Everton’s head coach following the dismissal of Sean Dyche.
Dyche was sacked after a poor first half of the season, just hours before Everton’s FA Cup clash against Peterborough.
Both Nigerian internationals, who previously played under Moyes during his initial spell at the club, shared their views on social media after the announcement.
Yakubu, who spent four successful seasons at Goodison Park, scoring 33 goals and providing 12 assists in 107 appearances across all competitions, applauded the appointment with "clapping hands and blue heart emoji."
Victor Anichebe, who rose through Everton’s youth ranks before establishing himself in the first team, scoring 26 goals and providing 18 assists in 168 matches, offered a more detailed reaction.
Those appearances were made by the two Nigerians with David Moyes in the Everton dugout.
In a post on Instagram, Anichebe expressed optimism about Moyes' return while acknowledging the challenges ahead.
He stated that stability and a return to core values were essential for the club, welcoming Moyes back and urging fans to give their full support during this period of transition.
"Stability and values of what it means to play for Everton is what the club needs now. Welcome back gaffer. Club has changed massively so it won’t be easy support is needed. Good luck gaffer."
David Moyes returns to Everton eleven years after initially leaving the club to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.
