Announcement imminent: Nigerian forward joins Swiss giants FC Basel subject to medical
Published: January 15, 2025
Swiss Super League giants FC Basel are on the brink of announcing the signing of Philip Otele.
FC Basel are aiming to strengthen their attack in the winter transfer market and the Nigerian winger is about to complete his move to the 20-time Swiss champions.
According to transfer market guru Fabrizio Romano, Basel have agreed a deal to sign Philip Otele from United Arab Emirates Pro League club Al Wahda.
The Nigerian attacker is coming from the United Arab Emirates on loan with a subsequent purchase option of three million euros.
Al Wahda could receive a percentage of Otele's transfer fee in the future as they have inserted a sell-on clause into the deal taking him to FC Basel.
Otele was scheduled to undergo a medical at FC Basel on Tuesday ahead of his unveiling.
The 25-year-old has struggled for goals this season, failing to score or assist in thirteen games across all competitions since transferring to Al Wahda last summer.
He had a banner season in 2023-2024, winning the Romanian Liga 1 top scorer award with 18 goals in 40 league games, which attracted interest from several European clubs but he chose to move to Al Wahda.
Apart from the aforementioned teams, Otele has worn the colours of Wolviston FC, Kauno Žalgiris and UTA Arad in the past.
