Crystal Palace complete record deal for winger who attended same school as Lookman, Etuhus
Published: January 18, 2025
With a statement on the club's official website, Crystal Palace have announced the signing of highly-rated teenage winger Romain Esse from Championship outfit Millwall.
Millwall have confirmed that the 19-year-old, whose contract was due to expire this summer before signing an extension in August 2024, departs The Lions for an undisclosed fee, which is a club-record sale.
According to multiple reports in the English media, Esse has joined the Eagles in exchange for £12 million which could rise to £14 million in potential add-ons.
An England U20 international, Esse has put pen to paper on a five-and-a-half-year contract with Crystal Palace and has been assigned the number 21 shirt for the remainder of the 2024-2025 season.
Esse attended St Thomas the Apostle College, which produced reigning African Footballer of the Year Ademola Lookman, former Super Eagles midfielder Dickson Etuhu and ex-Manchester City midfielder Kevin Etuhu.
Other alumni of St Thomas the Apostle College with Nigerian heritage include West Ham academy graduate Emmanuel Onariase and St Mirren midfielder Dennis Adeniran.
Esse's signing casts uncertainty over the future of 2019 Golden Eaglets invitee Malcolm Ebiowei at Crystal Palace as the two young talents share similar profiles.
