'I spoke with Cyriel' - Rangers coach shares discussion with Dessers about bench role
Published: January 18, 2025
Rangers manager Philippe Clement has shed light on his conversation with Cyriel Dessers regarding the striker's reduced role in the team, highlighting the emergence of Hamza Igamane as a key factor.
Dessers hopes to remain at Rangers beyond the January transfer window, but there are indications that the Light Blues are considering moving him on.
When asked if he had discussed Dessers' future with him: "I spoke with Cyriel about why he played less than before, yes.
"And that’s because of the evolution of Hamza also. So, we will see what happens."
Dessers, who joined Rangers for £5 million, has seen his minutes diminish as 22-year-old Igamane cements his place as the club’s leading striker.
Despite this, Clement praised the Nigerian international for his professionalism and dedication.
"Cyriel is working really hard. He’s doing everything. He’s good in the group. He's a very good lad. He’s thinking very collectively always,” Clement explained.
The manager also highlighted Dessers’ supportive role in Igamane’s development.
"He's in support of Hamza. He gave Hamza a lot of tips last couple of months also in the training and around games," Clement said.
Dessers made a significant impact in Rangers' recent win, reminding fans and teammates alike of his quality.
"Now in the last game, the way he came on, you don’t see a player who’s disappointed that he’s not starting, although he started a lot of games before and scored also a lot of goals.
"He's somebody who’s there for the team. Is there a moment that he wants to play all the games, then he needs to make a decision. If it's not the case, he's in competition with others that's playing at a top club," Clement concluded.
