Ejuke returns from three-month injury layoff to help Sevilla win away at Girona, Iheanacho absent
Published: January 18, 2025
Chidera Ejuke has finally returned from a hamstring injury that sidelined him since October 2024, making his comeback in Sevilla's 2-1 victory over Girona at Estadi Municipal de Montilivi.
Ejuke was named on the bench for the Andalusian side, while fellow Super Eagles teammate Kelechi Iheanacho was left out of the squad amidst speculation of a potential return to England.
He made his return to action eight minutes before the end of the game, replacing Isaac Romero, as Sevilla pushed to secure the victory.
His introduction eventually proved vital as Dodi Lukebakio scored the winner in the 88th minute.
The 26-year-old suffered the hamstring injury on October 20, 2024, during a league match against Barcelona at the Olympic Stadium.
He pulled up just minutes before the end of the first half, with Albert Sambi Lokonga replacing him.
Since the setback, Ejuke has missed a total of 12 matches for Sevilla, including nine league fixtures and three Copa del Rey ties.
Prior to the injury, Ejuke had been one of Sevilla's standout performers, dazzling fans and tormenting defenders with his dribbling skills and direct style of play.
His creativity was a vital tool for head coach García Pimienta in breaking down opposition defenses.
Before his spell on the sidelines, Ejuke featured in nine matches across all competitions, scoring one goal.
His impressive performances also earned him a call-up to the Super Eagles squad ahead of the 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Libya.
