Lookman enters Serie A record books after scoring in Atalanta's five-goal thriller against Napoli
Published: January 18, 2025
Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has kicked off his goal account for 2025, netting his first of the year in a thrilling encounter where Atalanta fell to Napoli with a score of 2-3 at the Gewiss Stadium.
Lookman scored the second goal for his team, offering a glimmer of hope in the crucial top of the table clash in Italy.
The Nigerian international enjoyed a stellar 2024 season, finishing with an impressive tally of 22 goals and 13 assists in 46 appearances across all competitions for Atalanta.
However, the start of 2025 has been tough for Lookman, as he struggled to find the back of the net or provide assists in his first three games against Inter Milan, Udinese, and Juventus across all competitions.
The match against Napoli saw Lookman return to form, scoring a brilliant equalizer in the second half after Napoli had taken a halftime lead.
Goals from Matteo Politano and Scott McTominay gave Napoli a lead at halftime, canceling an early opener from Mateo Retegui.
In a moment of brilliance, Lookman nutmeg on Di Lorenzo, surged past three more Napoli defenders, and delivered a precise finish through a crowd of legs into the bottom corner to equalize for the host.
According to Opta, history was made after Lookman's strike as for the first time in the Serie A, two Atalanta players scored at home and away against Napoli in a single edition of the tournament.
The reigning African Footballer of the Year scored a brace during Atalanta's 3-0 rout of Napoli at the Diego Maradona Stadium, while Retegui also found the net in the same game.
Lookman was substituted in the 77th minute for Nicolò Zaniolo, a decision that proved costly as Romelu Lukaku scored the decisive winner just one minute later.
Despite the loss, Lookman’s goal marked his thirteenth strike of the season, adding to his tally of six assists across 25 appearances in all competitions.
As he looks to regain his form, Lookman will be eager to build on this performance and help Atalanta find their rhythm in the upcoming matches.
