Damola Ajayi: Teenage forward receives first call-up for PL game in Tottenham's loss to Everton
Published: January 19, 2025
Nigerian forward Damola Ajayi received his first ever call-up for a Premier League game as Tottenham Hotspur were beaten 3-2 by Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday, January 19.
Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou picked Ajayi and another player with a Nigerian background, Callum Olusesi in the gameday 20 but the two teenagers have to wait for a Premier League debut as they were unused substitutes in the loss to the Toffees
This marked the second time this season that Ajayi was called up for a first-team game without seeing action, having remained on the bench during Tottenham's 2-1 win at Ferencváros in a Europa League match back in October.
The 19-year-old, who signed a new deal this month, has faced first-team opposition this season, starting against Bristol Rovers, Exeter City and Swindon Town in the EFL Trophy, and would have worn the number 63 on the back of his jersey if he had been given minutes against Everton.
in the 13th minute, Dominic Calvert-Lewin weaved through the Tottenham defence to score the first goal since David Moyes returned to Everton.
Iliman Ndiaye was at his sumptuous best as he doubled the advantage with 30 minutes played and it was three for Everton in first half stoppage time after an own goal by Archie Gray.
In the second half, Dejan Kulusevski pulled one back at minute 77, chipping the ball in over the heads of the Everton defenders and Richarlison squeezed home at the far post to make it 3-2 in the 92nd minute.
Damola Ajayi has two goals and one assist in eleven Premier League 2 games so far this season.
