6 goals disallowed due to offside: Galatasaray coach reveals strategy to transform Osimhen’s game
Published: January 20, 2025
Galatasaray coach Okan Buruk has revealed his strategy to refine Victor Osimhen's game by focusing on positioning with the help of video analysis.
In the ongoing Turkish Super Lig season, the Nigeria international has been caught offside twenty times in fourteen matches, trailing only Samsunspor's Marius Mouandilmadji (27) and Eyüpspor's Mame Thiam (21) for the most offside calls among players.
Osimhen has made headlines in Turkey after having six goals disallowed for offside, sparking debates about his positional awareness.
Despite the decisions, Galatasaray's coach Okan Buruk praised Osimhen's movement, highlighting his ability to deceive defenders and emphasized that top goalscorers often make calculated runs to gain a positional advantage.
When asked if he had a conversation with Osimhen about his positioning, Buruk was quoted as saying by habersarikirmizi.com: "He is a top-level center forward, both for the world, Europe and our league...
"Goal scorers sometimes move to gain priority according to the position. I think the important thing is to be in the positions."
Buruk drew a parallel with Galatasaray legend Burak Yılmaz, a Turkish forward who was known for his intelligent movements.
"We do video analysis of all matches. We have been giving the example of Burak Yılmaz for years, he is one of the best center forwards in Turkish football.
"Burak would also move between the defense, fall offside, if he didn't fall he would score. Osimhen is the same.”
The Galatasaray coach added that the focus of video analysis isn't just on avoiding offside but enhancing attacking efficiency.
"He will move between the defense, sometimes he will deceive the defense. He is a top-level center forward.
"Rather than how not to fall offside, we show how he can be better with video analysis."
Osimhen has been in sensational form since landing at Galatasaray last September, registering twenty goal involvements in eighteen appearances across all competitions.
