Banned in Portugal: Why Super Eagles left-back will miss Boavista's clash with Sporting Braga
Published: January 21, 2025
Boavista's struggles in the Portuguese Primeira Liga have been compounded by the news that Super Eagles left-back Bruno Onyemaechi will miss their next league game against Sporting Braga on Sunday, January 26.
The 26-year-old picked up his fifth yellow card of the season in Monday night's 3-2 home defeat to Casa Pia, triggering an automatic one-match suspension.
Onyemaechi's yellow card woes began in September last year when he was booked against Estrela Amadora.
He received another yellow card the following month against Vitoria Guimarães, and rounded up 2024 with a booking against league leaders Sporting CP in December. His first yellow card of the year came against Arouca in the game's added time, and his fifth booking came against Casa Pia on Monday night.
Despite his disciplinary issues, Onyemaechi has been one of Boavista's standout performers this season.
Against Casa Pia last night, he scored his third goal of the season and provided an assist, highlighting his importance to the team.
However, his efforts were not enough to prevent a 3-2 defeat, which has left Boavista struggling at the wrong end of the table.
Onyemaechi's absence will be a significant blow to Boavista as they prepare to face SC Braga in their next league game.
The defender has attracted interest from Turkish and Greek clubs, and his performances this season have only added to his reputation.
Boavista will be hoping that Onyemaechi can return from his suspension and help the team turn their season around.
For now, though, Onyemaechi will have to watch from the sidelines as Boavista takes on SC Braga without him.
The team will be looking to bounce back from their defeat to Casa Pia and pick up some much-needed points in the league.
