UCL: Super-sub Lookman scores and assists as Atalanta hit five past Sturm Graz
Published: January 21, 2025
Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman was in scintillating form as Atalanta cruised to a 5-0 victory over Sturm Graz in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday evening.
Lookman, who has faced a challenging start to the year, began the match on the bench despite finding the back of the net against Napoli over the weekend.
The Nigerian international was introduced at the start of the second half, replacing Mateo Retegui when the scoreline was still a narrow 1-0.
The forward made an impact, scoring Atalanta's fourth goal and assisting the fifth to cap off a dominant display by the Italian side.
Lookman’s goal came in the 90th minute when he connected with a pinpoint cross from Charles De Ketelaere, who had received the ball following a clever backheel from Juan Cuadrado.
Lookman turned provider deep into stoppage time, weaving past multiple challenges before setting up Marco Brescianini, who maneuvered past Lavalee and slotted home calmly in the 94th minute.
The victory highlighted Lookman’s pivotal role in Atalanta's UEFA Champions League campaign this season, where he has been one of the standout performers with four goals and two assists in six matches.
Other scorers on the night included Mateo Retegui, Mario Pašalić, and Charles De Ketelaere, as Atalanta dominated the Austrian side to solidify their push for a quarterfinal berth.
Lookman’s resurgence will undoubtedly be a significant boost for Gian Piero Gasperini’s side as they aim to progress further in the competition.
