Old Trafford thriller: Manchester United survive late scare from Dessers and Rangers
Published: January 23, 2025
Super Eagles stars Cyriel Dessers and Leon Balogun delivered notable performances despite Rangers suffering a narrow 2-1 defeat to Manchester United in their UEFA Europa League clash at Old Trafford on Thursday night.
Dessers, who has been striving to rediscover his form, scored Rangers' equalizer in the second half after an own goal by Jack Butland had handed United the lead.
The Nigerian forward fired a low shot into the bottom-left corner after connecting to a well-placed pass from James Tavernier in the 88th minute.
The goal marked Dessers' second strike in the Europa League this season, with his first coming on November 7, 2024, against Olympiakos.
The goal also followed his impressive hat-trick against Fraserburgh F.C. in the Scottish Cup on Sunday, signaling a potential return to form.
Meanwhile, Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun, who recently returned from injury, put on a solid display during the first half.
The experienced center-back registered two tackles, one interception, won three ground duels, and ensured he wasn’t dribbled past.
However, he was substituted at halftime for Bailey Rice, a decision that proved costly as United took the lead minutes after his substitution via Butland’s own goal.
United captain Bruno Fernandes sealed the victory with a clinical strike in the second minute of stoppage time, all but confirming Manchester United's spot in the UEFA Europa League last 16.
Despite the defeat, Rangers will take heart from the performances of Dessers and Balogun as they aim to bounce back in their next fixtures.
Dessers, in particular, will hope his recent form propels him back into contention for a starting spot as Rangers battle for success in both domestic and European competitions.
