'Not a bad finish' - Aston Villa legend says Iwobi was unlucky not to score against Man Utd
Published: January 26, 2025
Fulham were beaten 1-0 by Manchester United in a Premier League clash at Craven Cottage on Sunday night, with two Nigeria internationals Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey going the distance for the Londoners.
Despite the Red Devils not at their best, they secured all three points just like the opening day of the season, thanks to Lisandro Martínez's deflected effort in the 78th minute.
Toby Collyer saved Manchester United from conceding, making a crucial goal line clearance late in the game.
Fulham were the better side in the first half and had one or two opportunities to open the scoring but failed to capitalize on them.
In the 19th minute, the Manchester United defenders afforded too much freedom to Alex Iwobi, allowing him plenty of space to cut in from the left but his shot was directed straight at André Onana.
Although the Manchester United goalkeeper spilled the shot at first, no Fulham player was able to take advantage.
Legendary Aston Villa striker Dion Dublin, who was on punditry duties for Premier League Productions, noted that Iwobi was unfortunate not to open the scoring in the first half.
"There have been a couple of chances through Manchester United's mistakes, where they have just chosen the wrong finish," Dublin said during his half-time analysis.
"Iwobi is unlucky here, he's trying to get the far post. It's not a bad finish and the goalkeeper did well to hold on to it, which is what he should do because t's quite an easy one."
United's win moves them to 12th in the Premier League table with 29 points from twenty-three games, four points off the top half, while Fulham are tenth after suffering only their second loss in eleven games.
