'We controlled the game' - Calvin Bassey believes Fulham deserved more in defeat to Man Utd
Published: January 26, 2025
Fulham defender Calvin Bassey expressed disappointment after his side’s narrow 1-0 defeat to Manchester United at Craven Cottage, insisting that the hosts were unlucky not to secure at least a point.
Speaking to TNT Sports, Bassey reflected on the match, emphasizing Fulham’s dominance and lamenting missed opportunities.
"I thought we deserved more," Bassey stated. ”We controlled the game, and it wasn’t our day. You need a bit of luck in football, and it didn’t come our way today."
The Cottagers started brightly and had several chances to break the deadlock, particularly through Alex Iwobi and Raúl Jiménez.
However, their inability to convert opportunities ultimately cost them, as United’s Lisandro Martínez capitalized on a defensive lapse in the 78th minute to score the game’s only goal.
Bassey acknowledged Fulham’s struggles in the final third but insisted that his team had kept the visitors largely at bay.
"We had a lot of chances, maybe in the final part at the end could have been better. They didn’t create too much to trouble us. We were aware of their quality."
Despite Fulham’s possession and control, they failed to produce clear-cut opportunities, a fact not lost on Bassey.
"I felt like we didn’t create that much, clear chances," he admitted, highlighting a key area for improvement.
The defeat leaves Fulham in 10th place in the Premier League, four points ahead of United.
While the loss was frustrating, Bassey’s comments underline a sense of resilience within the squad as they aim to bounce back in upcoming fixtures.
