Middlesbrough RB makes decision over international future; chooses Nigeria over Germany, England, Kenya
Published: January 30, 2025
Allnigeriasoccer.com has been told that promising Middlesbrough right-back George Gitau has made a decision over his international future.
Born in Hamburg, the defender is a quad-national player as he is eligible to wear the jerseys of Nigeria, England, Germany and Kenya at international level.
Gitau qualifies to represent Nigeria's Super Eagles through his father and Kenya’s Harambee Stars through his mother, while also being eligible for England’s Three Lions through residency, having lived in the country for several years.
The 21-year-old is prioritizing playing for Nigeria over Germany, England and Kenya, and would honour a call-up to the Super Eagles if approached by the Nigeria Football Federation.
The governing body of football in Kenya, Football Kenya Federation (FKF) are believed to be monitoring Gitau's development, having named him in a provisional squad for the 2024 Cosafa Cup in South Africa.
Gitau is hungry to play first team football and was loaned out to Scottish Championship club Raith Rovers exactly a week ago, linking up with former Middlesbrough midfielder Barry Robson who coaches the Stark's Park outfit.
He received his first call-up to the Boro first team during the Emirates FA Cup clash against Brighton & Hove in January 2023 but was an unused substitute.
Gitau played grassroots football when he came from Germany at the age of six, before he got picked up by Arsenal at the age of nine, followed by spells at Crystal Palace and Brighton & Hove, and eventually found himself at Middlesbrough in 2020.
With a blend of physicality and technical ability, Gitau excels at both defending and pushing forward on the right side of the pitch.
He enjoyed a loan spell at non-league club Marske United in the second half of the 2023-2024 campaign.
