Published: January 30, 2025
Three Nigerian youngsters were on parade at Boundary Park on Wednesday night as Manchester United maintained their 100 percent record in the National League Cup, beating Oldham Athletic 5-0.
While fullback Habeeb Ogunneye and Chido Obi-Martin were both named in the starting lineup, Spanish-born forward Victor Musa entered the game as a substitute in the 84th minute.
After a goalless first half, the visitors opened the scoring through Jack Moorhouse, who rammed the ball home after brilliant footwork inside the penalty box at minute 63.
Obi-Martin doubled the advantage seven minutes later when a rebound fell to him and he finished from close range.
Malachi Sharpe slotted past the Oldham Athletic goalkeeper after a lovely ball from Ruben Curley with the outside of his left foot in the 72nd minute.
In the 83rd minute, Sam Mather drilled the ball into the roof of the net with his left foot to increase United's lead , before Victor Musa closed the scoring in the second minute of stoppage time.
Musa got up highest, nodded the ball down with great power and got himself his fifth goal of the season in all competitions, including two in the National League Cup.
Manchester United U21s secured the top spot in Group B and are now awaiting their quarterfinal opponents, with the next round of matches in the National League Cup set to take place on 5 and 6 February.
