Deadline day: Awoniyi to stay put at Nottingham Forest despite links with West Ham, Everton
Published: February 03, 2025
Super Eagles forward Taiwo Awoniyi is reportedly set to remain at Nottingham Forest despite interest from Everton and West Ham, according to BBC.
Awoniyi, who has struggled for game time this season, has lost his starting position to Chris Wood and has found it difficult to secure regular minutes under manager Nuno Espírito Santo.
The Nigerian international has made 19 Premier League appearances, but with only two starts and 17 substitute appearances, he has played just 248 minutes all season.
With his limited involvement, speculation grew over a potential move away from the City Ground, with Everton and West Ham reportedly interested in securing his services before the January transfer window closed.
However, with only a few hours left in the window, Awoniyi is now expected to stay and fight for his place at Forest for the remainder of the season.
The 27-year-old forward, who has managed just one league goal this campaign, will be hoping to earn more playing time to boost his chances of a call-up to the Super Eagles for the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in March.
Nigeria is set to face Rwanda and Zimbabwe in must-win fixtures as they seek to recover from a poor start in Group C.
Awoniyi last featured for Nigeria during the 2025 Afcon qualifiers in October, playing only 16 minutes in a 1-0 victory over Libya in Uyo.
