Central defender on the radar of Nigerian Federation nominated for Chelsea's Goal of the Month
Published: February 05, 2025
Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo has been nominated for the club’s January Goal of the Month award following his spectacular strike against Morecambe in the FA Cup.
The 27-year-old center-back, who is reportedly on the radar of the Nigerian Football Federation, delivered a remarkable performance in the third-round clash at Stamford Bridge, scoring twice as the Blues cruised to a 5-0 victory.
Adarabioyo’s second goal of the game, which earned him the nomination, was a stunning curling effort from the edge of the penalty area.
After receiving a pass from Tyrique George, the defender controlled the ball, took a touch to set himself, and unleashed a powerful shot that bent into the top left corner, leaving the goalkeeper helpless.
The strike was widely praised for its technique and precision, more reminiscent of a top-class forward than a central defender.
Adarabioyo is one of ten players nominated for Chelsea’s Goal of the Month award for January.
The list includes first-team stars Cole Palmer and Reece James, as well as academy talents and players from Chelsea’s women’s team.
Other nominees include Shumaira Mheuka, Catarina Macario, Aggie Beever-Jones, Sandy Baltimore, Oriane Jean-François, Maika Hamano, and Ato Ampah.
The nomination adds to speculation about Adarabioyo’s international future.
Born in London to Nigerian parents, the former Fulham defender has been linked with a potential switch to the Super Eagles.
While he has represented England at youth level, he remains eligible to play for Nigeria, and reports suggest that the Nigerian Football Federation is keen to convince him to commit to the three-time African champions.
