'We'll see' - Bayer Leverkusen coach Alonso not ruling out striking combo of Boniface and Schick
Published: February 07, 2025
Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso is considering a change in his attacking strategy, one that could see a striking combination of Victor Boniface and Patrik Schick more often.
The duo's brief partnership in the DFB Cup quarter-finals against 1. FC Cologne was a resounding success, and Alonso is keen to explore this option further.
Boniface, who had lost his starting place to Schick due to a long-term thigh injury, made a triumphant return to the pitch at the end of January.
His move to Saudi Arabia had fallen through at the last minute, and he has since been working his way back to full fitness.
The Nigerian striker's return to form has been impressive, and he boasts ten goals to his name already this season.
His partnership with Schick, albeit brief, has shown promise, and Alonso is eager to build on this momentum.
"They don't have the same profile. They can help each other, that's a good option," said Alonso, highlighting the benefits of pairing Boniface and Schick together at the pre-match press conference for their Weder Bremen game last week, as quoted by Sport1.
The Spanish gaffer welcomed the possibility of letting both play, stating that it is "great for the team, we'll see," he said.
With Leverkusen trailing behind league leaders Bayern Munich by six points, Alonso knows that he needs to get the most out of his players if they are to mount a serious title challenge.
Leverkusen's next test comes in the form of VfL Wolfsburg, a team that is tenth in the standings.
Wolfsburg will provide a stiff challenge for Alonso's team, but the Leverkusen coach is confident that his players can rise to the occasion.
The match against Wolfsburg will be a crucial one for Leverkusen, as they look to keep pace with the league leaders.
