Golden Shoe controversy: Former Georgia coach baffled Arokodare was snubbed for Denmark star
Published: February 08, 2025
The recent Golden Shoe awards ceremony has sparked controversy, with former Georgia coach Johan Boskamp expressing his disappointment over some players missing out on awards.
One player who Boskamp feels was unfairly underrated is Racing Genk striker Tolu Arokodare.
Arokodare has been in impressive form for Genk this season, scoring 14 goals and providing six assists in 24 league games.
His performances have been instrumental in Genk's rise to the top of the Jupiler Pro League, and Boskamp believes he deserved recognition for his efforts.
Boskamp's criticism of the Golden Shoe awards is not limited to Arokodare failing to crack the podium places, with the Nigerian finishing fourth behind Hans Vanaken (Club Brugge), Cameron Puertas (Union/Al Qadsiah), and Kasper Dolberg (Anderlecht) in that order.
He also expressed surprise at the absence of Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels from the 'Best Belgian Abroad' category.
Sels has been performing at a high level in the Premier League for months, and Boskamp feels he was unfairly overlooked.
"Dolberg (number three, ed.) may well be the better footballer, but over the entire year Tolu has achieved more," Boskamp said, comparing Arokodare's performances to those of Denmark international Dolberg, who finished third in the Golden Shoe voting as quoted by Voetbal24.
Boskamp's comments highlighted the subjective nature of awards ceremonies, where opinions on player performances can vary greatly.
As the Jupiler Pro League season enters its final stages, Arokodare's performances will be crucial to Genk's title ambitions.
The Super Eagles hopeful was the subject of significant transfer interest from various top clubs in Europe during the January transfer window but stayed put at Genk.
